TalentLab 2016: Phase One Update

What a great two weeks its been for this years TalentLab! We have had an action-packed fortnight of energising talks, workshops and artist collaboration.

This years cohort consisted of Sami Abusamra, Nadira Amrani, Jaha Browne, Louis Chan, Chris Chung, Nosa Eke, Iona Firouzabadi, Rabiah Hussain, Jameela Khan, Lwimbo Kunda, Lula Mebrahtu and Candice Onyeama. We had a wide range of projects and artists from short and feature films, interactive narrative games, live theatre performances and cross-platform stories.

TalentLab hit the ground running with a two-day master class from Writer, Producer and Filmmaker Nelson George, where the cohort had the opportunity to pitch their projects for development feedback. Nelson offered words of wisdom and took us through his own journey as an artist to bring inspiration to the group.

The first week also consisted of talks and workshops from industry practitioners and experts, including Professor Ken Dancyger, producer Fiona Lamptey, filmmaker Lab Ky Mowriter David Varela, filmmaker Marc Francis, Poet and Facilitator Jacob Sam-La Rose, filmmaker Afia Nkrumah, and London Short Film Festival Artistic Director Philip Ilson.

“I found TalentLab useful in having a space to pitch your ideas and gain feedback that’s constructive. Being able to have a space to converse and debate was crucial.”

It was great to have previous TalentLab alumni back to network, share their advice and artist journeys with the group! We welcomed back Writer Selina Lim, multi disciplinary artist Richard Ramchurn, Writer Zodwa Nyoni, Visual artist and filmmaker Riffy Ahmed, Poet/Performer Roger Robinson, Writer Divya Ghelani, and filmmaker Dean Anderson

The second week had a great balance of intensive development and pitching sessions led by Ken Dancyger, and insightful discussions led by B3 Media founder Marc Boothe on navigating the industry as an artist.

“TalentLab is a really wonderful and inspiring scheme…I’m so happy to have been selected to be apart of this!”
