In November we had the first phase of B3 TalentLab 2017 with special guest mentors Effie T Brown (Dear White People Film) and Nelson George (The Get Down). The week consisted of 5 days of workshops, 2 public events,
20 speakers and 14 participants. Spanning VR, short form, documentary, performance art, feature and animation, our cohort were given the chance to challenge and develop their projects and ideas, ending the week with a final pitch to Nelson and Effie.

We'd like to say thanks to all the mentors, speakers, technical support and interns who gave of their time and knowledge so generously and made B3 TalentLab another memorable experience.

B3 TalentLab is supported by our partners Creative Skillset’s Film Skills Fund, with BFI’s Film Forever National Lottery funds, University of Nottingham’s Horizon/ Mixed Reality Lab and Arts Council England.

B3 Associate Artists

In February 2017 we worked with 2016's B3 Talentlab participants to prepare for our B3 Futures showcase. This culminated in 9 of the UK’s cutting-edge emerging talent pitching to a packed house at Picturehouse

Central. Throughout the rest of 2017, some of these participants continued to receive our support and have gone on to residencies with MRL and become B3 Associate Artists:

Nosa Eke's (TL 2016) web series, "This Young Moment" will be going through further development with us at B3 in 2018. Currently, in the process of workshopping the script with actors, Nosa's web series explores the lives and events of its characters through the many lenses of social media.

B3 TalentLab Alumni Update

2017 saw B3 TalentLab Alumni continue to develop and complete their groundbreaking projects, ranging from shorts to features. Films were showcased at Aesthetica and East End Film Festivals and we look forward to developing even further relationships with other film festivals.

Congratulations

Huge congratulations to B3 TalentLab 2014 alumna director/writer Rungano Nyoni for the release of her first feature "I Am Not a Witch". The film was nominated for a British Independent Film Award for Best Screenplay and most recently for BAFTA's Outstanding Debut by a British Writer/Director.   A fantastic accomplishment and we'll be rooting for Rungano at the awards ceremony in February.

In June B3 ShortCuts took over the Ovalhouse Theatre featuring Greg Tate, discussing his career as a writer, his journey as a musician and life as a cultural provocateur followed by a Q&A with the audience. The night concluded with live performances by The Bakol and TalentLab alumna, Lula Mebrahtu.

B3 ShortCuts was invited to Encounters Short Film and Animation Festival to hold a panel discussion so we took filmmakers Sami Abusamra ("Our Father"), Riffy Ahmed ("Afloat"), Dean Leon Anderson ("Class 15") and Nosa Eke ('This Young Moment') along to speak about "How to Find Your Voice Around Stories That Matter." It was a great opportunity to catch up with them and down a few beers in the bar with the audience afterwards.
